Men who can’t tolerate the medicine or that would like to try an alternative medication can use an herb called saw palmetto. This is made out of an extract from the berries of a dwarf palm tree native to North America, called Serenoa Repens. Indians used it to treat men and women for certain genitourinary conditions. The usual dosage is 160 to 320 mg. Of the berry extract standardized to 85% to 95% fatty acids and sterols, it seems to be as effective as the other medications. Side effects are minor, mainly gastrointestinal. This can be avoided by taking it with meals. Research has shown that vitamins such as beta carotene and selenium (200 mg. per day) also seem to have a protective effect against cancer.
